Harvest Festival

Our afternoon Harvest Festival service on Sunday 13 September 2015 was a very special event. It included the presentation back to the church of the engraved trowel that was originally presented to Mr. John Brogden (the local ironmaster and chief benefactor of the church building) at the stone laying ceremony at Tondu on 8 June 1868. Until recently the whereabouts of the trowel were unknown and the church congregation was delighted to welcome Mr. David Budgett, a descendant of John Brogden, to return the trowel to Tondu. David was accompanied by his wife Eve and they had travelled from Macclesfield in Cheshire.

The engraving on the trowel reads:

Presented to John Brogden Esq by the Building Committee and other Gentlemen as a mark of respect on the occasion of his laying the Memorial Stone of the new Wesleyan Chapel, Tondu, July 8th 1867
